“Page automation ensures the continued survival of print editions,” commented Ulrich Schönborn, Editor-in-Chief at the Nordwest Mediengruppe during a recent INMA event.
The group is an early adopter of Eidosmedia’s page automation solution and has automated production of almost all local and regional print output. This includes the ten daily editions of the Nordwest Zeitung and the weekend editions of the Nordwest Sonntagsblatt.

“Our page automation solution is now in use at three news groups in Germany,“ said Jörg Drees, Eidosmedia Page Automation specialist. “It’s now being used for a total of 14 daily and two weekly titles.”
Following its success in Germany, the page automation solution has also been adopted by a leading media group in France. When completed, the deployment is expected to automate more than 15,000 pages a month.
“Automating print layouts brings significant savings to news organizations, “ said Stefan Bresslauer, Eidosmedia Head of Media and Corporate. “NWZ estimates that the cost of producing an automated edition is 35% that of a manual edition because of reduced staff expenditure. Savings on that scale are a massive contribution to the long-term sustainability of the news operation.”
Automated layout can also improve the overall quality of print editions as it frees up print channel staff to carry out quality control on page contents, including improving and updating the editorial content.
The layout engine is fully integrated into the Eidosmedia editorial platform. Stories are prepared for digital and print publication in the usual way. Text and images are then sent to a cloud-hosted AI model created by Sophi.io, together with a ranking for their news values. After a few seconds the page data is returned to the editorial workspace and the pages are filled with the selected content.
For a complete edition the process typically takes under two minutes. If necessary, the pages can be adjusted manually before PDFs are generated for print production.
“Print pagination also radically improves the productivity of mixed print-digital news operations,“ said Stefan Bresslauer. “Used together with Neon, our new AI-driven digital news platform, it delivers AI-powered productivity at every stage of the process from initial research to the last social post and page layout.”
